DOI : 10.23893/1307-2080.APS.05921 Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) of some xanthones from Swertia petiolata D. Don was investigated. Four xanthones, i.e., compounds 1-4 (swertianolin, norswertianin, bellidifolin and swertianin) were isolated from the n-butanol extract of methanol infusion of Swertia petiolata, purified by chromatography and re-crystallization and identified by comparative spectroscopic data. ICD was evaluated by open mouse ear assay and estimated by ID50. Four of the xanthones exhibited mild ICD activities, compared with positive controlled euphorbium. Compound-3 (swertianin) and compound-4 (swertianolin) exhibited a little more intense reaction than other two isolated compounds (norswertianin and bellidifolin) with ID50 = 0.524 and 0.784 respectively.
